If 36 mpg is supposed to be 'good', I have to wonder --exactly how big IS this thing? It must be hueueueuge to settle for that kind of mileage in a Diesel hybrid.
Just shows that European makers -even Germans- are not immune to mimicking stupid ideas. Lop off all that extra flab and get real. 36 mpg. Sheesh.

As suspected, it was only a matter of time until SUVs joined the bandwagon.

A step in the right direction, but the soccer Moms' love affair with the big SUV combined with all the crew cab pickups (especially 4x4 and even moreso the dualies) that never EVER see dirt have led us to think that the supply is inexhaustable and the subsidized price we have paid for years for gasoline is how it should be...
We are now in a world market, and we ALL need more efficient vehicles, and new alternative RENEWABLE fuels

If one can afford the car, fuel cost shouldn't be a problem and if so, the car was a pipe dream.

I guess if you can afford a BMW X5 you should not worry about fuel economy.

Sounds awesome, but I'll bet it won't make it to the US. You notice how it only gives the specs in KM and not in miles. Too bad, cause they really have something special in that: we love our SUVs and it gets a subcompact gas mileage. Bravo !!!

To Mooseman...The intent is not to be more efficient than small cars but to deliver better functionality with less gas use. It's about time that diesel's come on board & also used in hybrids. 36 mpg is good for its size. Could be even better if full hybrid & can add in bio-diesel use for even better affect. Would I buy one - No... more than I need & too expensive.

I don't thing the fuel consumption will be less than the Honda Civics or Toyota Corollas, turbos tend to guzzle.

This IS the wave of the future. Diesel hybrids are close to the best bang for the buck.
36 mpg out of an SUV?

Prestige (for some), a whole lot of money and little extra mileage. What a deal. Hurry before they are all gone.

yes diesel prices are currently higher than gas. Here they are $.66 higher. But if you get twice the milage, the cost per mile is a LOT LESS.
I have a diesel pick up truck. I get 24 MPG vs 12 (for gas version)

Nice idea, but why a mild hybrid? Go for the dull benefit of the technology. And it seems that while 36 mpg is certainly better than 20, this technology should really be used to push the possibilities. And who needs an SUV anyway?

Amazing... I'm sitting here reading some of the comments and just shaking my head. Step back and look at the bigger picture for a minute. What does the current X5 get for fuel economy? 15 to 20 mpg? This one is getting almost double that by switching to hybrid technology. 36 mpg not good for a hybrid? Based on what? Your low slung Prius or Civic with the small 4 cylinder engine? Yes I would expect those to get high numbers based on it's size.
Take note that we are pushing a brick through the wind at 55 mph not something with low resistance.
